Saturday night’s biggest storyline during Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was a simple question: What’s wrong with Patrice Bergeron?
Patrice Bergeron injury: Bruins center will travel with the team
The forward has apparently left the hospital despite reports of a spleen injury.
Well, we still don’t know for sure, but the good news is that Bergeron has reportedly left the hospital (where he went, under his own power, during last night’s third period) and will travel with the team back to Boston Sunday morning. There’s no other word on the Bruins’ centerman, though Claude Julien will likely give some sort of vague update on Bergeron during the coaches press conferences this afternoon.
The most intriguing/crazy rumor came from a report by Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, who suggested that Bergeron may have suffered a spleen injury. One suspects that may be errant if Bergeron was immediately able to travel, however. All Julien would say after the game is "It's just an injury that wasn't able to let him finish the game. He may be in next game. I'm not going there."
Bergeron’s possible return would be immense for the Bruins, who now trail the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final. He has nine goals -- second among all forwards in the playoffs -- and 15 points -- 10th best -- in the postseason. He also has a reputation for being one of the best faceoff men in the game. The Bruins could certainly use him with their backs to the wall for Game 6 in Boston on Monday night.
