With the first pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Colorado Avalanche selected center Nathan MacKinnon from the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL.
2013 NHL Draft: Avalanche select Nathan MacKinnon with No. 1 pick
Nathan MacKinnon was selected with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft.
MacKinnon is thought by many to be the best forward available in the draft. He led the Mooseheads to the 2013 Memorial Cup Championship and scored 75 points in 44 games, despite missing time due to participating in the World Junior Championships (a special honor for a 17-year-old) as well as a late-season injury. MacKinnon led the Memorial Cup -- the Canadian junior hockey championship -- in scoring with 13 points in four games, including a hat trick and five points in the title game.
The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native was ranked No. 1 among all skaters by ISS, No. 2 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, and No. 3 overall by Craig Button of TSN. He's projected to become a power forward in the mold of Jeremy Roenick, according to ISS. MacKinnon is one of two Halifax Mooseheads (the other being Jonathan Drouin) projected to be picked very high in this draft.

He’s the offensive leader and star of the Halifax Mooseheads, the champions of the QMJHL. With the exception of games missed due to participating in the 2013 World Juniors, and a late-season injury, MacKinnon has been a consistent offensive threat for the Moose, while playing a strong two-way game.
