2013 NHL Draft: Canucks select Bo Horvat with No. 9 pick

In a shocking turn of events, the Vancouver Canucks obtained the No. 9 overall selection via trade with the New Jersey Devils for goaltender Cory Schneider. With the pick, Vancouver selected Bo Horvat.

With the ninth pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected center Bo Horvat from London of the OHL.

Horvat finished fourth on the OHL Champion London Knights in scoring, with 61 points and 67 games. He added 16 goals and 23 points in 21 games en route to a Memorial Cup appearance. Among his teammates in London was top prospect Max Domi, selected 12th overall this year by the Coyotes.

Horvat is ranked No. 10 among all skaters by ISS. NHL Central Scouting has him ranked No. 15 among North American skaters, while TSN’s Craig Button ranks him No. 19 among all prospects. ISS projects him as a comparable player to Ryan O’Reilly.

The Canucks acquired the selection from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for goaltender Cory Schneider.

Prospect Profiles

Five For Howling:

Described as, “one of the most complete forwards in this draft,” by Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus, Bo Horvat has been steadily moving up draft boards. At 6’0” and 203 pounds, Horvat is a physical two-way center who kills penalties and wins face-offs. What separates him from the pack is his offensive upside.

Jackets Cannon:

The London Knights have been one of the biggest powerhouses in the OHL for years, and 2013 was no different. With a stacked up club, they’ve got a number of high profile prospects, including Horvath. A strong two way player, Bo Horvath has been one of the top PKers and shot blockers for the OHL Champions. A strong scoring threat in addition to his willingness to take the body, he’s a player that opponents have to be aware of every time he’s on the ice.
