2013 NHL Draft: Capitals select Andre Burakowsky with No. 23 pick

Capitals select Andre Burakowsky with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

With the No. 23 pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals select left wing Andre Burakowsky from Malmo of the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan.

Burakowsky put up 11 points in 43 games for the Malmo Redhawks, a team in the Swedish second division. He is Austrian born, but participates for Sweden in international tournaments. He is the son of Robert Burakowsky, who spent a season with the Ottawa Senators in 1993-94.

ISS ranks Burakowski No. 16 among all skaters, while TSN’s Craig Button has him ranked No. 58 among all prospects. Meanwhile, NHL Central Scouting has him at No. 6 among European skaters.

Here’s more on Burakowsky from Jackets Cannon:

He’s a bit young for this class, and a bit undersized at this point, but should be fine with his 6’1” frame over time. He skates very well, gets good burst and power, and has solid hands around the net and in space. He plays with some jam, and with his skills, he could be a top-6 NHL player before too terribly long. He will probably need an extra couple of years of seasoning before he gets to the NHL, however. He sputtered a bit this season in Sweden, and didn’t get the ice time many had hoped he’d earn.
