The St. Louis Blues have decided to cut ties with David Perron, the team announced on Wednesday. Perron was sent to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Magnus Pääjärvi and a second round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Perron was an integral piece of the Blues offense this season as he played in all 48 regular season games, adding 10 points and 15 assists in an even 18 minutes of action per contest. He fell out of favor with coach Ken Hitchcock prior to the playoffs, however, and was demoted to the fourth line in order to contribute a mere two assists in the six-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
Pääjärvi is a solid young forward with a lot of upside that just hadn’t been realized in Edmonton. Hitchcock is notoriously hard on young players, but the hope for St. Louis is that Pääjärvi will be able to add to a foundation of young guns.
“He is just coming into his own and this will open up more ice time for Jaden (Schwartz) and Vladimir (Tarasenko). I would like to thank David for his time in St. Louis and wish him well in Edmonton.”
The deal that should also help the Blues clear cap room so they can keep Alex Pietrangelo and Chris Stewart. The 22-year-old Pääjärvi was the Oilers' first-round pick in the 2009 NHL Draft.
