Rob Blake named assistant GM of Kings

Rob Blake has been named the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Kings.

The Los Angeles Kings have hired Rob Blake as the club's assistant general manager, the team announced Thursday.

Blake will be taking over the position left vacant by Ron Hextall, who will be joining the Philadelphia Flyers organization. He has acted as the Hockey Operations Manager of the NHL's Department of Player Safety for the past three seasons. By most accounts, Blake was viewed as the potential replacement for Brendan Shanahan as the head of the department in the event that Shanahan accepted another position within the league.

In his new position with the Kings, Blake will act as the general manager of the club’s American Hockey league affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, as well as aide manager Dean Lombardi in contract negotiations, player personnel and prospect development.

Originally selected with the No. 70 overall selection in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by Los Angeles, Blake spent the majority of his playing career with the Kings.
