Colorado has come to terms on a five-year contract extension with Matt Duchene.

The two sides have agreed to a five-year extension that will keep the 22-year-old forward under contract until the completion of the 2018-19 season. Duchene had one-year remaining on a two-year, $7 million contract that accounted for $3.5 million against the salary cap. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next offseason.
Duchene’s contract will begin in 2014-15 and will pay the forward $30 million, according to Stephen Whyno of the Canadian Press. That total will carry an annual average value of $6 million.
This marks the first substantial signing under the new management group headed by Joe Sakic. Duchene was originally taken with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and made the team out of his inaugural training camp the same year. Duchene has played in 266 career regular-season games, collecting 193 points (82 goals, 111 assists).
Duchene was one of eight Colorado players scheduled to become a restricted free agent next offseason, which includes captain Gabriel Landeskog who is entering the final year of his entry-level contract.
