The Nashville Predators have placed defenseman Hal Gill on waivers, general manager David Poile announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nashville Predators have waived veteran defenseman Hal Gill.

Gill is entering the final year of a two-year, $4 million contract that carries an annual average value of $2 million against the salary cap. Poile stated that the Predators’ drafting of Seth Jones with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft made Gill an expendable asset. The GM believes that Gill no longer fits in with the construction of the club.
While this obviously speaks about Gill, it also indicates that Jones is expected to make the team out of training camp next season.
The 38-year-old veteran was originally acquired by the Predators via a trade with the Montreal Canadiens in February of 2012. Nashville made the move in an attempt to solidify their defense corps in hopes of making a run at the Stanley Cup. However, the team was ultimately eliminated in the Western Conference Semifinal by the Phoenix Coyotes in five games.
