Lecavalier is likely considered the biggest name on the free agent market this summer and has gained interest from several teams. Based upon reports, the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals have all engaged in discussions with the 33-year-old former member of the Tampa Bay Lighting.
By most accounts, Dallas is believed to be the front-runner.
Nashville general manager David Poile altered this perception when he stated on Tuesday that Lecavalier was not interested in leaving the East Coast. However, subsequent reports -- namely LeBrun’s -- indicate that the Stars are still very much in play.
Multiple accounts state that Lecavalier is seeking a five-year, $25 million contract, which amounts to an annual average value of $5 million per season. This asking price is believed to be too steep for Detroit in both term and financial commitment, according to Ansar Khan of MLive.com on Tuesday. Based upon Poile’s statement, Nashville is assumed to be out of the running as well.
Given that Lecavalier was extended a compliance buyout, he was permitted to speak with teams prior to 12:01 a.m. ET on July 3. While he might announce his decision on Wednesday, he will not be eligible to officially sign a contract until noon on July 5 at the start of free agency.
