Carlo Colaiacovo buyout: Red Wings likely to get rid of defenseman

An injury-plagued season will likely be the only one the defenseman plays in Detroit.

After a season in which he missed 33 games with a shoulder injury, Carlo Colaiacovo will need to find another spot to ply his trade next season.

The Detroit Red Wings are likely to spend a compliance buyout on the 30-year-old defenseman. He played only six regular season games for the Red Wings, putting up only a lone assist. In the second game of the season, Colaiacovo suffered a shoulder injury that forced him our for nearly three months. He played in nine of Detroit's 14 post-season games, also putting up just one assist. His buyout puts Detroit at $10.7 million in cap space, with 20 players currently on the roster.

Colaiacovo has played in parts of 11 NHL seasons, He has 110 assists and 140 points in 376 career NHL games with Toronto, St. Louis and Detroit. His best season came in 2009-10 with the Blues, when he put up seven goals and 32 points in 67 games, the most he's played in an NHL season.
