Unrestricted free agent forward Ryane Clowe has agreed to terms on a contract with the New Jersey Devils, according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN on Friday. Clowe agreed to a five-year, $24.25 million contract, that carries an annual average value of $4.85 million against the salary cap.

Clowe enters the market after a frustrating start to 2013, which resulted in his inability to score a goal in 28 games with the San Jose Sharks last season. After being traded to the New York Rangers at the trade deadline, Clowe combined for three goals in 12 games. However his playoff performance was limited to two games due to a concussion. In fact, much of his 2013 is believed to be hampered by injury, as Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports Clowe sustained three concussions last season.
The Rangers and Clowe expressed mutual interest in extending their relationship, but the declining salary cap made that a difficult venture. Clowe was largely expected to be a highly sought after commodity this summer. In order for him to stay off the market would have required a substantial deal.
He ultimately received that from the Devils.
In 435 career regular season games, the 30-year-old forward has compiled 279 points (104 goals and 175 assists). He was originally selected with the No. 175 overall selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by San Jose.
