Ray Emery has agreed to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers as an unrestricted free agent. This will mark his second stint with the club.

This marks Emery’s second stint with Philadelphia as he signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the team prior to the 2009-10 season. The hope is that his second run with the Flyers is more successful than his first as he was diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which is a disease that kills the cells of bones by cutting off the blood supply. While it was caught early enough to ultimately save Emery’s career (it wasn’t clear at the time whether he would be able to play again), it effectively ended his season after only 29 games.
Emery joins Steve Mason in what is assumed to be an open competition for playing time. Mason is largely viewed as a reclamation project and was expected to compete with Ilya Bryzgalov for playing time. That seemingly should still remain the case with Emery. Given that Emery would have remained in a backup role with the Chicago Blackhawks, the opportunity to earn playing time was likely an attractive component to signing with Philadelphia.
In 21 appearances with the Blackhawks last season, Emery recorded a .922 save percentage with a 1.94 goals-against average and three shutouts. He earned $1.15 million last season on a one-year deal.
