NHL free agency: Daniel Alfredsson agrees to terms with Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have come to terms with Daniel Alfredsson on a contract.

This officially completes a stunning course of events that began on Friday morning when reports broke that Alfredsson had informed the Senators that he decided to sign with a new team. By most accounts, Alfredsson returning to Ottawa was considered a formality. The only dissenting factor was believed to be his motivation level to commit to a rigorous training program this summer in anticipation of a full NHL season.
Apparently, that wasn’t the case.
In a speculative sense, the 40-year-old is likely chasing an opportunity to win a Stanley Cup. His decision to leave Ottawa apparently displays that he doesn't believe the Senators will have an opportunity to compete for one next season.
Interestingly enough, Detroit will be in Ottawa’s division next season under realignment. Alfredsson had spent the entirety of his career with the Senators, captained the team since 1999 and is beloved by the fan base. How they receive him in his first game back will be a point of interest.
