Rich Peverley to miss three weeks for procedure to correct irregular heartbeat

The Dallas Stars will likely be without one of their newest acquisitions for most of the pre-season.

Dallas GM Jim Nill announced Friday that center Rich Peverley underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat. The problem was noticed when the team’s training staff looked over the EKG Peverley had during his physical. He is capable of skating at the moment, but not allowed to participate in any sort of contact.

“It turns out he had an `a-fib’ condition,” Nill said. “He’ll be out three weeks and should be available close to the start of the season. He might miss one or two games.” The Stars kick off the season on Oct. 3 at American Airlines Center against Florida, and play again Oct. 5 at home vs. Washington. After that, the team has a five-day break, so Nill’s prognosis could be feasible.

The 30-year-old Peverley was acquire from the Boston Bruins in a trade that also sent Tyler Seguin to Dallas. Peverley spent two-and-a-half seasons in Boston, and was a member of their 2011 Stanley Cup Championship team and, obviously, part of the team that lost to Chicago in this year’s Stanley Cup Final. More of a two-way forward, his best offensive season came in Atlanta in 2009-10, when he scored 22 goals and 55 points.
