Jamie Benn named Dallas Stars captain

The Dallas Stars have named Jamie Benn the sixth captain in team history.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Stars named Jamie Benn team captain during a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Benn is the sixth captain in franchise history and replaces Brenden Morrow who acted as the Stars captain from 2006-2013 before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins prior to last season's trade deadline. Dallas elected to use three alternate captains rather than name a replacement captain last season.

Considering Benn’s progressive development over the years, the club decided that it was time to turn the team over to him. Manager Jim Nill stated that Benn was the obvious choice to be the team’s leader and that conversations with the players proved that.

Benn will be supported in the leadership group by alternate captains Ray Whitney and Stephane Robidas.
