The Washington Capitals and restricted free agent Marcus Johansson are still attempting to reach an agreement on a contract extension prior to training camp. The team is hopeful Johansson will be with the team and with a new contract when camp opens on Sept. 12, manager George McPhee told Chuck Gormley of Comcast SportsNet Washington.

The Capitals presently have $2.6 million in cap space, according to CapGeek.com. Gormley writes that Johansson is looking to earn an annual average salary of $3 million, which is a sizable raise compared to the $900,000 he earned on his entry-level contract (the deal included a $270,000 signing bonus).
The team’s cap situation plays no bearing on the negotiations with Johansson, according to McPhee. If the team needs to create space under the cap, it will be willing to do so, but the offers presented to Johansson are based upon what the organization believes he is worth, via CSN Washington:
“We try to negotiate based on what we think the player is now and what he’s going to be and attach a number to it and that’s what we try to work with,” McPhee said. “It’s not about using the cap one way or the other to get a deal. It’s about what this guy’s worth.”
