Referee Wes McCauley gets knocked down

Sometimes referees get in the way. Sometimes they get knocked over.

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

For the most part, NHL referees and linesmen do a pretty solid job staying out of the way when it comes to the game taking place around them.

But because it is such a fast-paced game played in such tight spaces, they do find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time every now and then. Just like it is for players, sometimes it can be dangerous.

Just ask referee Wes McCauley after what happened to him in the second period on Monday night during the Calgary-Carolina game. That's when Andrej Sekera bumped into him along the wall. McCauley took a pretty big spill, appearing to bang the back of his head off the ice. Luckily for him he appeared to be OK.
