Eric Staal injury: Canes’ captain to miss 5-6 days

After sustaining a lower body injury on Saturday, Eric Staal was held out of the Hurricanes’ Sunday game, and will miss about a week.

The Carolina Hurricanes are in a middle of a push for one the three guaranteed playoff spots in the Metropolitan Division. For about a week, however, they'll have to do it without their captain Eric Staal, who was injured Saturday in a game against the Islanders.

Staal left with what was termed a lower-body injury, and his status for Sunday night’s game against Nashville was uncertain. But hours before that matchup, Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller announced the all-star forward would miss 5-6 days with the injury.

Staal, a bubble player for Team Canada and the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, has been an iron man throughout his career, per the Hurricanes’ Michael Smith.

The Hurricanes are part of the Metro Division jumble that includes the Flyers, Capitals, Rangers, Devils, and Blue Jackets, six teams fighting for two playoff spots, and separated by six points entering Sunday night's action.
