NHL Scores: St. Louis scores two; Jagr ties Lemieux

Most of Canada was losing its mind on Tuesday with the announcement of the 2014 Olympic team, and when the dust finally settled almost all of the discussion focused on the players that didn't make it (just as it did with the American team last week). The two most glaring omissions were Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis.

Both players were certainly disappointed with the news, but both stepped up in a big way for their NHL teams on Tuesday night and played big roles in their wins, including St. Louis as he scored a pair of goals for the Lightning in their 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Elsewhere, New Jersey Devils forward Jaromir Jagr tied his former teammate, Mario Lemieux, for seventh place on the NHL's all-time points list with 1,723 when he assisted on Adam Henrique's goal just 57 seconds into the Devils' game. New Jersey would go on to lose to Philadelphia in overtime.

Sabres, Hurricanes postponed

Ho hum, just another three-point night for the Islanders' superstar as he had three helpers in their 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Did they ever! The Coyotes completely dismantled the Calgary Flames with a 6-0 win that was highlighted by the second career shutout for goaltender Thomas Greiss and goals from six different players.

The Sharks got their first taste of life without Couture, who is going to miss a few weeks after surgery this week, on Tuesday night and it didn't exactly go well in a 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators. With Couture and rookie sensation Tomas Hertl out of the lineup for the foreseeable future, that's a lot of firepower sitting on the bench. Fortunately for the Sharks if there's a team in the NHL that has the depth to handle such losses, it's them. It just didn't work out on Tuesday.

They did, and it was thanks almost entirely to the play of Jonas Hiller in net. Sure, the Ducks scored four goals against Boston, but Anaheim was completely dominated in the first period (outshot 16-3) and had it not been for Hiller making brilliant save after brilliant save -- including this robbery on Brad Marchand -- it could have very easily been a completely different game. The Ducks are now 18-0-2 on home ice this season.

After taking a skate to the stomach and receiving a huge -- and scary -- cut, Brayden Schenn came back to score the game-winning goal in overtime for the Philadelphia Flyers to take over sole possession of second place in the Metropolitan Division. Sure, the division as a whole is a pile of mediocrity, but it's a testament to the Flyers that they have been able to come back when you consider where they started the season.

After their 5-3 loss to the New York Islanders -- a team that played the night before and had to travel into Toronto for the second half of a back-to-back -- the Toronto Maple Leafs now have just five regulation wins over their past 30 games. That is not good, and the sign of a team that is quickly going in the wrong the direction. The only positive for this team right now is the Eastern Conference as a whole is so bad their recent slide (which is actually the majority of the season) hasn't completely knocked them out of a playoff spot. You had to know it was going to be a rough night in Toronto when Jonathan Bernier just gave the puck away to Michael Grabner behind the net for an easy goal.

• Canada announced its Olympic roster on Tuesday morning. It's pretty good, even with a host of noticeable omissions.
• Speaking of which, their B Team would be pretty sweet, too.
