John Scott skates around Brooks Orpik, scores 3rd career goal in 237 games

The Washington Capitals spent a lot of money last offseason in an effort to improve their defense, signing former Penguins blueliners Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen to huge contracts. When it comes to the Orpik contract, few deals received more criticism over the summer than the five-year, $27.5 million deal he signed on the first day of free agency. This play in the first period on Tuesday night, when San Jose's John Scott collected the puck at the blue line and blew past him like he was a traffic cone, is Exhibit A as to why.

For Scott, that’s only his third career goal in 237 NHL games, so it’s kind of a big deal for a guy that’s known more for fighting people than anything.

It also gave San Jose a 3-0 first period lead and chased Capitals goalie Braden Holtby from the game. Not to understate it, but things are not going well for the Capitals early on.
