T.J. Brodie's hot start to the 2014-15 season has paid off, literally.
Flames ink T.J. Brodie to five-year contract extension
Brodie is quickly becoming one of the league’s best young defensemen.
The 23-year-old Calgary Flames defenseman has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension that will be finalized on Monday. TSN's Bob McKenzie reports that the annual average value of the contract is somewhere around $4.6 million.
The Flames are extremely thin on the blueline, so locking up Brodie long-term was a priority. Brodie and captain Mark Giordano combined to become one of the NHL's most underrated defensive pairings last season, finishing with a higher CORSI percentage than both their teammates and their competition in the Western Conference.
Calgary's push to lock up Brodie long-term had to intensify over the last two weeks. Brodie shot out of the gate with four goals and seven points in his first seven games. The young (and now significantly richer) defenseman scored his fourth of the season on Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets.
