How to watch Penguins vs. Flyers online, preview, game time and TV schedule

The Flyers and Penguins resume the battle of Pennsylvania on Wednesday night.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

The Philadelphia Flyers were absolutely embarrassed by an elite team in Chicago on Tuesday night, and it doesn’t get any easier as they head into Pittsburgh to take on the rival Penguins on Wednesday night. Might more nationally-televised embarrassment be on the way?

The rivalry aspect of these games against the Penguins certainly seem to help the Flyers, who despite having clearly been an inferior overall team compared to Pittsburgh in recent years have come away with an impressive 13-7-0 record over the last three seasons. That doesn’t have any bearing on Wednesday night’s contest, but Philadelphia has ridden special teams to success in those games, scoring 28 power play goals in their last 21 games dating back to the start of the 2011-12 season.

It’s the first game of the rivalry for Penguins coach Mike Johnston, and his team certainly matches up well with Philadelphia at even strength. The Flyers could be without defenseman Braydon Coburn again Wednesday night -- he’s a game-time decision and will test out an ailing injury in warmups -- and that only means Pittsburgh has more bandwidth to exploit Philly’s already weak, slow defense at even strength.

These games always come with something unexpected, and we’ll just have to see what it brings for the first time here in 2014-15. The game will be broadcast nationally in the United States and Canada, and the Canadian national anthem will be performed prior to the game, honoring Ottawa after the tragic events that unfolded there earlier in the day.
