NHL scores 2014: Oilers stun Rangers, Blackhawks thump Sharks

Edmonton made it two wins in a row and frustrated New York in the process. Elsewhere, the Canucks won the Kesler trade for at least one night.

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

It was a great night for the Edmonton Oilers as they won their second straight game.

The Oilers took out the New York Rangers 3-1 at Madison Square Garden with goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and former Ranger Benoit Pouliot while Teddy Purcell added the empty-netter. The Oilers are showing signs they might not be as bad as their two separate losing streaks have made them out to be. After they put up 52 shots on goal against the Sabres on Friday in a 3-2 win, life without Taylor Hall is getting a little better.

As for the Rangers, they’re weren’t exactly pleased with getting 21 shots on goal and losing their second straight and four of the last five.

Elsewhere, the Chicago Blackhawks jumped on the San Jose Sharks in the first period with three goals and went on to a 5-2 win. Joe Pavelski did his best to get the game to within 3-2 after two periods, but Bryan Bickell and Jonathan Toews padded the lead in the third to make it look like a laugher.

Trevor van Riemsdyk scored his first NHL goal for Chicago. His brother James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they knocked off the Ottawa Senators 5-3.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a shootout when Ryan Callahan scored the only goal in the skills competition. Unfortunately, the game didn't end in overtime because that was the most thrilling part of the game.

3 Things We Learned

1. Overtime hockey is great and if games aren’t going to be decided in regulation we should find a way to have more overtime played. The overtimes played between Detroit and Tampa Bay as well as Vancouver and Anaheim were played at breakneck pace with a ton of chances. More please!

2. Give it up to the Maple Leafs for winning a game without any help from Phil Kessel. The Leafs had five different goal scorers including recent call-up Josh Leivo. Peter Holland, and David Clarkson also scored to help the Leafs beat the Senators in their re-scheduled game. While the Leafs looked strong, Sens goalie Robin Lehner managed to make a handful of outstanding saves to keep it just a two-goal game. There are silver linings everywhere if you look hard enough.

3. The Canucks won the Ryan Kesler-Nick Bonino trade! Well, they did for one night at least. Bonino scored in the shootout and Kesler's attempt to keep the skills competition going clanked off the post to give Eddie Lack and the Canucks a 2-1 win. Hard truth? Kesler played great and helped keep the Sedins off the board. Kesler and Bonino each assisted on their teams goals in regulation. This analysis shall go on forever.

Impact Moment

Did you see Steven Stamkos' second goal against Detroit? If you didn't, please fix that right now. If there was a non-impact moment of the night, look no further than Darren Helm's shootout "attempt."
