Penguins win shootout after Rangers’ game-winning goal waved off

Replay cost New York a win.

It's not often that you see firsts in the NHL these days, but the end of the Rangers-Penguins game on Saturday was something the league had never seen before.

New York and Pittsburgh exchanged rounds in the shootout before Dan Boyle stepped up for the Rangers in the third round with a chance to win the game. Boyle skated in quickly and looked like he scored the winning goal on Marc-Andre Fleury. The goal light came on and the Rangers started celebrating.

But the referees quickly huddled up and began reviewing the play as the Rangers went off to the locker room. When the replays were shown, it became clear why.

As you can see, Boyle’s initial shot was stopped by the post. The puck then bounced back off his stick and into the net. That second bounce counts as a second shot, and therefore the goal didn’t count.

Here’s another look. You can clearly tell the initial shot went off the pipe, making its eventual direction towards the net a clear second attempt, whether Boyle intended it or not.

The referees waved off the goal and the Rangers were bizarrely forced to return to the ice to continue the shootout.

At that point the Penguins got their chance to score, and Brandon Sutter did just that, sealing an incredible win for the Penguins under the most bizarre circumstances.
