Jake Gardiner gifted a goal to the Lightning

Lesson learned: Never send the puck blindly up the boards. Also, don’t screen your own goalie.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner has had his ups and downs this season and his night against the Tampa Bay Lightning isn't off to a great start.

With the Maple Leafs on the power play, Gardiner played the puck at center ice by blindly sending it off the boards and right to Lightning forward Alex Killorn.

Killorn took the puck right back the other way in against Gardiner who then screened goalie Jonathan Bernier as Killorn shot it, beating the goalie to tie the game 1-1.

Gardiner has been scratched during this season and a mistake like that won’t sit well with coach Randy Carlyle.
