NHL schedule 2014: 10-game slate includes Islanders, Predators and Penguins

A full slate of games is highlighted by the Nashville Predators, New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Three of the hottest teams in the NHL headline a busy 10-game schedule on Tuesday night, as the Nashville Predators, New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins will all be in action.

The Islanders and Penguins enter the night battling for the Metropolitan Division lead. Pittsburgh currently holds the edge having played one fewer game, but both clubs have 34 points and can overtake the Metro dependent on result. Pittsburgh will attempt to maintain its lead while playing host to the New Jersey Devils, while the Islanders will also be at home facing the Ottawa Senators.

Ottawa is six points above the Buffalo Sabres in the Atlantic Division and has lost two straight. The club is 3-6-1 in its last ten and has a 5-7-1 record on the road this season. This will be the first meeting between the Islanders and Senators, one which kicks off a home-and-home series that will conclude in Ottawa on Thursday.

New Jersey is in the middle of the Metropolitan Division, only four points out of a playoff spot and six points above last place. The Devils lost their last game (which was against the Islanders) and have gone four straight without a win, but have collected two points over that span. The team is 6-8-1 on the road and lost a lopsided affair in Pittsburgh earlier this season, 8-3. This will be the second of five meetings between the division rivals this season.

The Predators will be on the road on Tuesday, as they travel east to challenge the Carolina Hurricanes. Nashville has won four straight and sit atop the Central Division with 34 points. The club has an identical point total to the St. Louis Blues but have played fewer games and thus have the division lead. Carolina is one point above the Columbus Blue Jackets for last place in the Metro and are 3-7-0 in its last 10 games.
