The St. Louis Blues lost their captain due to friendly fire on Monday. Midway through the first period against the Florida Panthers, David Backes set up in front of the net looking for a redirection off a shot from the point.

Instead, the puck flew high and caught him squarely in the jaw.
Backes is a tough guy, but taking a puck to the mouth like that appeared to have even him scared. He got up quickly, clutching his face, as he skated quickly off the ice and into the dressing room.
He didn’t return for the second period, as doctors were still checking him out before letting him return to the ice.
Luckily for Blues fans (and Backes himself), the injury doesn’t appear to be serious. He returned to the game with a full cage:
