Dan Girardi signing: Rangers defenseman re-signs for 6 years

Dan Girardi won’t be leaving the Rangers any time soon, according to TSN.

Strike one name off of the trade deadline day watch list, as Dan Girardi has elected to stay in New York City, re-signing with the Rangers for six more years after this one at a surprisingly large salary of $5.5 million per year.

The $33 million contract pays Girardi an extra $2.175 million per year over and above his last contract, and keeps Girardi in a Rangers uniform until the age of 36.

Barring an unforeseen trade, this deal is long enough to nearly assure that he spends his career as a Ranger, though there is a lot of risk involved in extending a shot blocking defenseman like Girardi for such a long term.

Girardi’s contract has a full no-movement clause for the first three years of the deal, with a modified no-trade clause over the final three years, according to Katie Strang of ESPN.

With Girardi signed, Glen Sather's attention before the trade deadline will now be focused entirely on Ryan Callahan, his other high-profile unrestricted free agent.
