Martin St. Louis will replace Steven Stamkos on the Canadian Olympic team.

Perhaps the most controversial omission when the initial team Canada roster was named, Hockey Canada announced on Thursday morning that the Tampa Bay Lightning forward will be replacing Steven Stamkos on the roster for the games in Sochi. Stamkos has been out since November after suffering a broken tibia.
It was announced on Wednesday that Stamkos had not yet been cleared to play and would not be able to represent Canada at the Olympics. That opened the door for St. Louis to get his shot on the team.
In 56 games this season, St. Louis has scored 25 goals to go with 29 assists. He has been one of the hottest players in the league since the naming of the Canadian roster. St. Louis has made one other appearance on the Canadian Olympic team, scoring two goals for the 2006 team.
Pittsburgh’s James Neal and Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux were two other names that seemed to receive consideration for the open spot.
