The good news for the Washington Capitals is that thanks to Evgeny Kuznetsov's shorthanded goal with 42 seconds to play in regulation -- his first goal in the NHL -- they at least gained a point in the standings in their quest to secure one of the two Eastern Conference wild card spots.
Evgeny Kuznetsov whiffs on shootout attempt
Evgeny Kuznetsov was 2-for-2 in the shootout entering Tuesday night. His third attempt did not go very well.


The bad news is they missed the opportunity to gain an additional point by losing the game in a shootout. Things got off to a rocky start in the shootout when Kuznetsov had some issues with his shot attempt on Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
The Capitals finish the night tied with Toronto for ninth place in the Eastern Conference,
