St. Louis Blues trade rumors: Are there any moves left to make?

St. Louis snagged the biggest fish at the deadline. But are they done making moves?

The St. Louis Blues made the biggest deal of the deadline by trading for goalie Ryan Miller and forward Steve Ott last week, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a few moves left to make.

By acquiring Miller, the Blues sealed up the only glaring weakness in their roster. Jay Buowmeester, Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk anchor a deep blueline that is a huge reason why the Blues are in the top three in both shots against and goals against per game.

It’s probably safe to assume St. Louis feels set for a deep playoff run and won’t make any more moves.

But in the interest of speculation...

Center depth
For a Blues team that seems extremely well-balanced, the center depth behind David Backes leaves a little to be desired. Derek Roy and Patrik Berglund are fine players, but neither can really be relied on if St. Louis’ other scoring options go cold during the playoffs.

There are a few players on the market who could fit into the Blues lineup if they look for an upgrade down the middle. Olli Jokinen could be acquired for a reasonable price if Winnipeg drops out of the playoff hunt. David Legwand is in the final year of his contract in Nashville and could be convinced to waive his no-movement clause to join the Blues.

St. Louis has the prospects to make a deal for either player. But their financial situation could keep them from pulling the trigger.

The Blues have about $1.6 million in cap space to work with after acquiring Miller and Ott. This means that any trade for a center would require offloading an expiring contract or moving a talented player still under contract.

General manager Doug Armstrong is a smart man, and it’s possible he could find a way to improve his forward depth while avoiding cap penalties. But odds are he’ll stay off his phone on Wednesday and get his current team ready for a run at the playoffs.
