Tim Thomas trade: Dallas Stars acquire veteran goaltender from Florida Panthers

The media firestorm that was about happen with an incoming Tim Thomas and Roberto Luongo bromance has been canceled with Thomas being traded to Dallas.

The Dallas Stars have robbed us all of a possible bromance between Tim Thomas and Roberto Luongo by trading for the veteran goaltender, sending Dan Ellis to Florida in return.

In 40 games for the Florida Panthers this season, Thomas holds a 16-20-3 record with a .909 save percentage, below league average. It is a big drop for the former Conn Smythe and Vezina Trophy winner, who took all of last season off, and has struggled with injuries at the age of 39.

The trade is an odd one from the perspective of the Stars, who have Kari Lehtonen entrenched in goal. Lehtonen has had a bit of a rough season by his standards, but his still put up a solid .916 save percentage in 51 starts.

For now it looks like Thomas will be the backup in Dallas for the rest of the season, a role that didn't seem to be a big need for the Stars, who yesterday dealt Stephane Robidas, giving the impression that they were selling at the deadline, not buying.
