Coyotes lose in shootout after Thomas Greiss turnover

The Coyotes really could have used Mike Smith in this situation.

The Phoenix Coyotes have made a habit out of blowing third period leads lately, a trend that continued on Friday against the Edmonton Oilers. And this one will hurt. A lot.

With the Coyotes leading 2-1 in the final minute, backup goaltender Thomas Greiss attempted to play the puck behind his own net only to have it stolen by Jordan Eberle.

Eberle then banked it off of Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek in front of the net to set up Sam Gagner for the game-tying goal with just 40 seconds to play.

The Coyotes would go on to lose in the shootout, 3-2, and leave an important point on the table in the Western Conference wild card race.

By losing in the shootout they at least picked up one point and moved ahead of the Dallas Stars for the final spot, but the extra point would have been huge, especially since Dallas still has two games in hand.

Injured goalie Mike Smith is one of the best puck-handling goalies in the NHL, and Phoenix really could have used him in this situation.
