NHL trade rumors: Senators in talks with 4 teams for Jason Spezza

Jason Spezza’s time with the Ottawa Senators could be coming to an end.

It seems that trade talks involving Jason Spezza and the Ottawa Senators are starting to pick up.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports on Wednesday that the Senators are having conversations with four teams, including three teams in the Western Conference, for the veteran center.

Spezza, who just turned 31 earlier this month, is entering the final year of a seven-year contract, $49 million contract and has reportedly asked for a trade out of Ottawa. In 75 games last season he scored 23 goals to go with 43 assists.

It's not known what teams may have interest, but the New York Rangers would seem to be a logical guess for the Eastern Conference team. They need a No. 1 center, just used a compliance buy out on Brad Richards, and are always kicking the tires on any big name player that becomes available, whether it be in free agency or a trade.

As far as the Western Conference teams go, the Anaheim Ducks are known to be in the market for another center to play behind Ryan Getzlaf and have been mentioned in trade rumors for Vancouver's Ryan Kesler. The Ducks have the necessary cap space as well as the young talent that Ottawa would be looking for in return to pull off such a move.

The Blackhawks are another serious Western Conference contender that are in the market for a No. 2 center, and Spezza could be a perfect one-year stop-gap until prized prospect Teuvo Teravainen steps in to the role.

Spezza has spent his entire career to this point with the Senators, scoring 251 goals in 686 games. Since entering the NHL during the 2002-03 season only 10 players have recorded more assists than his 436.
