NHL Tuesday: Milestone night for Patrik Elias

When Randy Carlyle was fired as Toronto’s head coach early in the afternoon, the tone for the rest of the day was essentially set. Leafs fans (and anyone who follows analytic numbers closely) cheered and breathed sighs of relief. But the narrative eventually turned ugly.

The blogosphere attacked Carlyle. Players fought the media. Media fought the players. Media fought bloggers. Ron Wilson fought everyone. You get the picture.

Getting cut by a skate blade is a danger in hockey. It comes with the territory. But getting cut in the face? That’s not something many players are prepared for, especially when the one causing the injury is your teammate.

Thankfully, Schenn returned in the second period with a few stitches. But there’s no question he dodged a big bullet.

When Mike Ribeiro made a lazy turnover feet from his own net, Rinne was forced to make a save with his back turned to the shooter. And of course he made it.

Rinne somehow managed to blindly throw his leg out and make one of the season’s best saves. We’ve watched the replay ten times and still don’t have a clue how he found the puck.
