Wild acquire Sean Bergenheim from Panthers for playoff push

Minnesota is stocking up for a run at the playoffs.

The surging Minnesota Wild added another gun to their arsenal on Tuesday, acquiring disgruntled forward Sean Bergenheim from the Florida Panthers in a trade.

The Wild will also receive a seventh-round pick from Florida in a deal, while only giving up a third-round pick for the haul. Both picks are for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Bergenheim’s exit from Florida has been widely anticipated for a few weeks now after his relationship with the team has publicly soured. After multiple healthy scratches by coach Gerard Gallant, Bergenheim’s agent requested a trade and demanded an apology from the Panthers coach. Bergenheim and Gallant have butted heads over both his role and effort, so it was only a matter of time until the veteran was shipped out.

Bergenheim has eight goals and 18 points in 39 games this season. He’s not the biggest splash the Wild could have made, but he could provide some valuable scoring depth for a team making a strong push to make the playoffs in the Western Conference.
