NHL schedule 2015: Penguins visit Capitals for Metro Division bout

The Eastern Conference rivalry highlights Wednesday’s action.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

With the Metropolitan Division race wide open, the Washington Capitals have a chance to leapfrog the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday in front of a national audience.

The Caps are just one point behind the Pens in the standings -- the two teams have 76 and 77 points, respectively -- and are only six points out of first place. This will be their fourth matchup of the season; Washington won all three prior meetings in regulation, outscoring Pittsburgh 10-1 in the process.

Up in New Jersey, the Calgary Flames are slated to take on the Devils in an inter-conference affair. Though New Jersey is a notoriously low-scoring club, it notched four goals against Calgary when they clashed on Nov. 22. That offensive surge wasn't enough, however, as the Flames came out on top in overtime, 5-4.

Out West, the Ottawa Senators will play the Anaheim Ducks, who lead the Pacific Division by a healthy 10 points. Left wing Jiri Sekac is scheduled to make his Ducks debut after being traded for Devante Smith-Pelly on Tuesday. Sekac, 22, has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 50 NHL games.
