Maple Leafs breakdown leads to Sabres goal

Not Dion Phaneuf’s finest moment.

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Sabers are the worst team in the NHL, and the Toronto Maple Leafs, mired in a plethora of on- and off-ice issues, are not far behind. So, naturally, when these teams get together on the same sheet of ice, some bad hockey is going to be played.

Wednesday’s contest has been no exception. A little more than halfway through the first period, Dion Phaneuf lost the puck at his own blue line, which allowed Buffalo to gain possession and go on the attack:

Seconds later, Johan Larsson scored to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

Phaneuf has received more flack in Toronto than he deserves, but this was a truly awful play by the veteran defenseman. Not that he received much help from his teammates.
