Lace ‘em up. Time for the Morning Skate.
THE NEWS FROM LAST NIGHT
- Washington gave Braden Holtby a rest, and his backup went out and earned the NHL’s first shutout of the year. The reality is, though, that the odds were stacked against the Avalanche.
- A former (WORLD CHAMPION) Allen Americans goalie got his first win in his first career NHL start. This, despite A) Islanders rookie Anthony Beauvillier scoring his first goal, B) New York playing well in the second period, and C) Brent Burns scaring everybody.
- The Canadiens routed the defending champions in their home opener. Not a bad way to start the year, eh?
- Minnesota chased Jeff Zatkoff and the Kings out of the building. Silver linings are becoming hard to come by in L.A.
- Philly mounted a valiant comeback in Chicago after a terrible start, but Marian Hossa’s 500th goal pushed the Blackhawks ahead in the end.
- Calgary finally won their first game against a Sabres team that’s probably just tired of traipsing around the western half of the continent.
- Anaheim laid another egg and Taylor Hall cashed in twice for the Devils.
- Ottawa picked apart the Coyotes at home.
- Florida battled well but Steven Stamkos’ ridiculous goal helped put them away.
- Jason Spezza continues to make Predators fans sad.
- Cam Talbot got left out to dry again but it didn’t matter this time.
- The Canucks: STILL UNDEFEATED (?)
ELSEWHERE IN HOCKEY LAND
