Johnny Manziel might not be a desirable parallel for talented young athletes these days, but a burgeoning Calgary Flames superstar just drew one.
Johnny Gaudreau successfully trademarks ‘Johnny Hockey’ nickname
Shades of Johnny Manziel.

TSN reporter Rick Westhead confirmed on Monday that Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau’s application to trademark his “Johnny Hockey” nickname has been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The trademark was registered on July 5, and allows Gaudreau to exclusively use the Johnny Hockey name on all kinds of clothing. Including boots and underwear. Sure.
If this sounds at all like Johnny Manziel’s “Johnny Football” nickname and trademark, it should. Around the time Manziel was making runs at the Heisman Trophy for Texas A&M, Gaudreau was making runs at the Hobey Baker Award (NCAA hockey’s Heisman equivalent) as a sophomore at Boston College. Thus, the name “Johnny Hockey” was born.
Manziel notably trademarked his nickname in 2014.
Unlike Manziel, Gaudreau is likely to stick around in the pros for awhile. He’s coming off a 30-goal, 78-point season and a six-year contract extension with Calgary worth $40.5 million.
