A trade partner was nowhere to be found.

The New York Islanders appear ready to move on from both Jaroslav Halak and their three-goalie conundrum.

New York placed the veteran goalie on waivers Friday after he suffered through one of the worst months of his career. If he clears waivers, Halak will be assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. The last time Halak was in the minor leagues was during the 2006-07 season.

The Islanders are now left with Thomas Greiss and Jean-François Bérubé to man the net.

Halak first reportedly hit the trade market in late October, when his agent criticized the Islanders for keeping all three goalies on the NHL roster. Conventional hockey wisdom is to rotate two goalies in a season, but the Islanders were clearly afraid of losing one of them to the expansion draft this summer.

We’ll see who ends up picking Halak off waivers, if anyone. Halak is a proven NHL starter, but his numbers have trailed in the last few years. He’s an above-average goalie for his career, but this season has not gone well. In the last month, Halak went 3-2-1 with a .906 save percentage and a 3.55 goals against average.
