Colorado is getting younger this deadline. Just minutes after trading for 26-year-old Mikkel Boedker from Arizona, the Avalanche picked up a young defenseman from New Jersey.

Eric Gelinas is headed to Colorado in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2017 draft. The 24-year-old has played just 156 games in the NHL with 14 goals and 40 assists over his four years in the league.

There’s a lot to like about this trade for the Avalanche. Gelinas has upside as a young defenseman and has a noted powerful canon of a shot from the power play, a boost that could help Colorado’s 13th-ranked power play that sits at 19.1 percent.

Of course, like any young defenseman, he is still prone to mistakes. However, giving up a third-round pick two drafts from now is a low risk, potentially high reward for the Avalanche, who are hanging on to the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

Gelinas carries a $1.575 million cap hit this season, according to GeneralFanager.com.
