Bruins acquire Lee Stempniak, John-Michael Liles late on NHL trade deadline day

Boston paid a lot for them.

The Boston Bruins were in need of reinforcements leading up to the 2016 trade deadline and found them in a couple of veterans.

In separate trades, Boston acquired Carolina Hurricanes defenseman John-Michael Liles and New Jersey Devils winger Lee Stempniak. Both deals happened in the waning moments before the 3 p.m. ET NHL trade deadline on Monday, and neither was announced until the deadline had passed.

This is the fourth time in six years that Stempniak has been moved on the trade deadline. Boston will be the ninth team he’s played for in his NHL career.

Meanwhile, the Devils received two draft picks for Stempniak, whom they could’ve just signed this summer as an unrestricted free agent.

The 33-year-old Stempniak was the Devils’ top scorer this season with 16 goals and 41 points in 63 games. Liles hasn’t registered more than 22 points in a season since 2011-12.
