Tom Wilson levels Avalanche defenseman with a massive hit

Was it legal?

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson added to his reputation as a heavy hitter on Friday with a monster hit that injured Colorado Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov.

Wilson had just come off the bench in the second period as Zadorov was swinging around behind the Avalanche net. Zadorov was behind a Capitals forechecker and didn’t see Wilson coming until it was too late, if at all.

If that looked violent in real-time, wait until you see it in slow-motion:

The question in play here, obviously, is if principal contact was with Zadorov’s head and whether it was targeted. I’ll let you be the judge on what could be a difficult one for the Department of Player Safety to parse out:

Zadorov was slow to get up and left the ice for the locker room. Wilson was not penalized for the hit.

UPDATE: Zadorov will not return to Friday’s game with what the Avalanche are calling a “head injury”.
