Senators fire head coach Dave Cameron and assistant coaches

The NHL’s firing season is here.

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

Following an unsuccessful 2015-16 season, the Ottawa Senators have fired head coach Dave Cameron after two seasons with the team.

In the NHL’s first coach’s firing of the offseason, the Senators relieved Cameron and assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley of their duties from the organization on Tuesday. Cameron was the franchise’s 11th head coach, but was unable to move a stagnant team forward after missing the playoffs this season.

Cameron was promoted to head coach in December 2014 after previous head coach Paul MacLean was let go. In two years with the Senators, Cameron went 70-50-17 (.537) in 137 games.

In a clear effort to shake things up within the organization, Cameron's firing should not come as a surprise. While the Senators had made the playoffs last season, the team seemed to be stuck with no future plan in place. The biggest in-season move, trading for Maple Leafs' defenseman Dion Phaneuf, sent various prospects Toronto's way for an over-30 blueliner.

No replacements have been named for Cameron and his assistants.
