Steve Mason will not sleep well for the next two nights.

A horrendous gaffe in the second period by the Philadelphia Flyers' goalie ultimately doomed his team in a 4-1 loss in Game 2 to the Washington Capitals Saturday. The series heads to Philadelphia with the Capitals leading 2-0.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby was the star of the game, stopping 40 shots in the win. Nicklas Backstrom led the Capitals with three points.

Once again, the two sides played a close game for long stretches in Game 2. The Capitals broke through first with five minutes remaining in the first period when defenseman John Carlson fired home his second goal of the playoffs.

Whatever hope the Flyers had of regaining momentum ended two minutes and change into the second period. Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner tried a pass to teammate Jason Chimera from his own goal line. Chimera deflected it instead, and it somehow rolled through Mason's legs for a 200-foot goal and a 2-0 Capitals lead.

Despite the setback, the Flyers seemed to recover. Philadelphia got on the board and restored the one-goal deficit with a Jakub Voracek goal at 9:37 of the second period. It was his first goal of the playoffs.

But then Philadelphia got into penalty trouble. Special teams have been Washington's bread and butter this series, and this time was no different. Nicklas Backstrom found Alex Ovechkin in his favorite power play spot for the 3-1 lead.

The Flyers’ attempt at a comeback fell short when Backstrom beat Mason’s blocker side for a 4-1 lead with less than three minutes left in the third period. Washington’s lead would hold, and they extended their series lead to two games.
