Panthers vs. Islanders 2016 final score: Overtime favors Islanders as Brooklyn gets first taste of playoffs

The postseason’s second overtime game decided a high scoring contest in Brooklyn.

The offside coaches challenge wormed its way into a third straight game, which in turn gave us one of the greatest periods of playoff hockey this postseason. At the end of the night, the Islanders came away with the 4-3 victory in overtime to take control of the series 2-1.

Five goals were scored in the second, two from the Panthers and three from the Islanders. Florida almost had a third, which would have given them a 3-0 lead at one point in the period, but an offside challenge took away Aaron Ekblad's first career playoff goal.

Reilly Smith continued the trend of the Panthers opening the scoring early, getting his fourth tally of the series two and a half minutes into the game. Thomas Greiss made the original stop, but was not able to get back in time to save Smith's rebound at the side of the cage.

The second period was where all the action was. Aleksander Barkov started the crazy for Florida a minute and 11 seconds into the period with a goal that rebounded off the glass that the forward was able to get to before Greiss could snag it. Ekblad thought he had his first of the playoffs to make it 3-0 Panthers, but the heel of Jonathan Huberdeau was found to be in before the puck on the zone entry, so the goal was disallowed.

Momentum shifted in the Islanders way. New York gained a 5-on-3 power play, which Ryan Pulock blasted home the 2-1 shot. The Panthers came storming back minutes after as Nick Bjugstad popped home a rebound with Greiss out of position.

To cap off the high-scoring second period, the Islanders went back to back on goals in just over five minutes of playing time. Shane Prince was left alone in front of Roberto Luongo, who could not stop the shot stick side to cut the lead to 3-2. Then again on a power play, Frans Nielsen cut through the slot with a rising backhander that beat Luongo in the final minutes of the second.

With a more reasonably calm third period in the books, the Islanders and Panthers headed to the playoff's second overtime game. It took almost 13 minutes to get there, but Thomas Hickey was left all alone in the slot after a Brock Nelson pass from behind the net connected for the 4-3 game winner.
