Steve Mason stones 3 tremendous Red Wings scoring chances in quick succession

Mason played the hero for the Flyers on Wednesday.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings are essentially playing for their playoff lives on Wednesday, and it's only thanks to heroics from goalie Steve Mason that the Flyers weren't in a deeper hole at the midway point.

Already down 2-0 midway through the second period, the Flyers gave up three grade-A scoring chances to the Red Wings in quick succession. Mason stopped them all.

The first was on Dylan Larkin:

And a minute later, Wings forward Darren Helm got a breakaway and tried to go five-hole on Mason. The Flyers goalie shut it down, and then somehow stopped the rebound chance too:

Mason had 14 saves on 16 shots by that point. Both teams are battling for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
