The United States’ roster for the 2016 World Cup was released on Friday, and it’s more notable for the names not on it than the ones that are.
Phil Kessel, Kevin Shattenkirk left off of final USA World Cup of Hockey roster
The United States will go to Toronto without some notable names.
Pittsburgh Penguins winger Phil Kessel, St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk all missed the final cut.
Instead, Team USA general manager Dean Lombardi chose to take a familiar lineup to the World Cup. Veterans Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, David Backes and Jack Johnson return alongside team stars Joe Pavelski, Patrick Kane and Max Pacioretty. Head coach John Tortorella likely had a large say in the roster; he's coached Dubinsky, Callahan and Johnson in the NHL for years.
