You better be in shape if you apply for a job with the Calgary Flames these days.
The Calgary Flames made their new head coach climb a mountain before hiring him
Literally.

On Friday, the Flames announced they've filled their head coach vacancy with former Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks coach Glen Gulutzan. In his introductory press conference, Gulutzan hit the familiar notes about how he was excited to join the team and what kind of style he'd like to play.
And then he dropped this nugget on us.
As part of #Flames interview process, Glen Gulutzan climbed Grouse Grind in Vancouver with Craig Conroy.

(Conroy is the Flames’ assistant general manager, by the way.) For the unfamiliar, the Grouse Grind is a popular trail up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. Nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” the trail reaches an altitude of 2,800 feet over 1.8 miles with an incline that regularly hits 30 degrees. It’s been labeled as one of the world’s most dangerous hikes, and there’s this little paragraph about it on Wikipedia:
The difficulty of the trail is often underestimated. The District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue conducts many rescues each year of hikers who collapse on the Grouse Grind, or begin too late in the evening and are unprepared to find their way in the dark.
Suddenly it makes sense why the Flames were the last NHL team to fill their head coach vacancy.
